A phrase developed by k. kennedy Whiters, a “redacted history” omits facts about the past that hold people of the past accountable for harming others, and if (un)redacted, would illustrate how they and their descendants benefited from the harm. A “redacted history” is the foundation of a “redacted heritage.”

A phrase developed by k. kennedy Whiters, “redacted heritage” is a behavioral pattern in which a person or group omits facts from their racial or cultural history to preserve the comfort and dominance of their race or culture. People and cultures who embrace this redacted heritage interpret their history using ’redacted grammar and language,’ such as the passive voice, to develop a redacted history that excludes their inclusion in narratives and interpretations of historical traumas they caused others to experience.
This “redacted heritage” creates psychological distance between them as perpetrators of harm, in the past, present, and future in their minds and in the minds of others. People and cultures who embrace a “redacted heritage” embrace only the parts of their history that make them feel good and support their sense of belonging. Their history is a redacted one, or redacted history, because it omits facts that would shed light on the harmful parts of their culture and the fullness of their humanity, i.e., both their light and their shadow sides.”
Appears with “redacted history” as “redacted history and heritage.”
